Meal Plans

v1 and rev

For students living in Village 1 or Ron Eydt Village

watermelonKeep your money in your pocket and use your meal plan! Whether you’re hanging out with friends around a platter of wings at our Superbowl party, or digging into a steaming bowl of fortifying veggie chili while cramming at 3 a.m., residence meal plans are simple to use and let you eat when you want to (Mudie’s or Revelations is open 24-hours during winter and fall exam time.) With so much variety across campus, you won’t go hungry at Waterloo!

As a student living in Village 1 or Ron Eydt Village, you must choose a Residence Meal Plan Allowance, also known as a RMPA, for each four-month term. You can use your RMPA at all UW Food Service eateries, which makes eating at Waterloo easy to fit in with your busy schedule.

What’s in it for me?

You can head down from your REZ room for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a quick snack – the caf is open long hours and we have lots of food choices. The extra bonus is that you can use your meal plan dollars at any UW Food Services eatery across campus, which means you can grab a cup of coffee from your favourite Timmie’s before class! And talk about brownie points, most menu items are tax exempt too, which will save you a cool 13%.

How does it work?

sandwichThe fixed overhead cost ($910) is deducted from the cost of your meal plan. This deduction pays for utilities and labour costs, repairs and maintenance and renovations in our facilities each term.

Don’t Worry!

We give you a 50% discount off almost everything you buy so that you have the same purchasing power of the full cost ($1820) meal plan. And you get clean, contemporary dining areas with flexible and varied menus that fit your schedule and lifestyle. Clear as Mississippi Mud Pie? think of it like this: every time you buy a sandwich you’re getting 50% off, so year meal dollar goes twice as far – and you get comfy chairs and great service too!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

WHAT'S THE SCOOP?

Lite - This is a great plan for students who go home on weekends or are light eaters.

Average – This is a great option for students who are average eaters unless they choose another option through the UW Housing’s website.

Hearty – Choose this Flex Dollar selection if you plan on eating at campus seven days a week. (Or just can’t get enough of our amazing food.)

Note: Students are automatically registered for the RMPA Average option. Flex Dollars are not tax exempt.

Want to change your meal plan to Lite or Hearty? Visit the Housing & Residences website and select, “check your room assignment” to make your change.

Add some Flex Dollars

Have a big appetite? There’s no need to deny your hunger. Flex dollars are used to top up your empty RMPA account before the end of term and for additional on–campus services such as vending, laundry, buying textbooks and even for buying food at participating off–campus restaurants. Transfer money from your Flex Dollars – which can be loaded onto your WatCard any time – to your empty RMPA account. That way you can keep getting that valuable tax exemption.

ask us

What happens if I have a leftover balance?
Any money remaining on your WatCard will automatically carry forward each term for as long as you are a student at UW. A few things to keep in mind: Meal plan money carries forward as Transfer MP money and does not convert to Flex Dollars. Any meal plan money that carries forward (RMPA or VPMP) is not HST exempt.
Do I still get a discount on transferred meal plan money?
Your meal plan discount only applies during the term in which you purchased the plan. But here’s the good news: If you buy a meal plan during a subsequent term, the discount for that plan will apply to your Transfer MP money.
What if I forget my WatCard? Can I lend my WatCard or borrow someone else’s?
Due to special pricing and tax status for most students, your WatCard must be presented for every purchase. In fact, meal plans are non transferable and by law can’t be shared. That means you can’t use someone else’s WatCard to purchase items – even if they say it’s okay.

The Small Print

Federal and Provincial tax legislation prohibits the use of tax-exempt meal plan funds by individuals who are not qualified to receive these benefits. Only the WatCard holder may purchase meals. WatCard holders purchasing more than one meal at a time will be charged appropriate taxes on the meal with the lower value. All applicable discounts will be applied before taxes. Each transaction the cashier will examine the photo on the WatCard to ensure that the person making the purchase is the WatCard holder. In all cases where the cashier suspects that somebody is using a WatCard other than the cardholder, the cashier must keep the card and prevent its use. The WatCard will be forwarded to the WatCard Office within four hours where it can be picked up by the proper cardholder at that time, or the next business day. Fraudulent use of WatCard funds to purchase food for other people may result in loss of all discount and tax exemption privileges. The security of a WatCard remains the cardholder’s responsibility. WatCards should be treated like a credit or debit card. If a WatCard is lost or stolen the cardholder is responsible for all charges made to that card until the card is reported lost or stolen. A WatCard can be reported lost or stolen at any WatCard cash register on campus, at the WatCard Office, or online at the WatCard homepage. All WatCards are the property of the University of Waterloo.
